The Pediatric Grand Rounds at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine are dynamic educational sessions bringing together clinicians, researchers, and learners to discuss the latest developments in pediatric medicine. It serves as a vibrant intellectual marketplace for exchanging ideas, exploring questions, and refining best practices.
Hole in the Heart has collaborated with UNM Pediatric Grand Rounds to offer three (3) topic-driven sessions on Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs). These sessions are open to a broad audience including pediatricians, specialists, residents, fellows, medical students, and anyone passionate about expanding their knowledge of CHDs.

Childhood Chronic Illness, Congenital Heart Disease & Mental Health

Presented by Sandra Sanchez Fahrlender, Founder of Hole in the Heart & April Lewis-Ramierez, LLP/RPT, The Treehouse: Explore the connection between childhood chronic illness and mental health, as well as the integration of mental health screenings during patient-physician consultations. A CHD parent will share her family’s experience with childhood chronic illness, discuss the link between CHDs and mental health, and emphasize the significance of heeding mothers’ insights during medical examinations.
